Real Mallorca – Real Madrid, a trip down memory lane 🇬🇧

Promotion brings many prizes and one such prize is the visit of Real Madrid to Son Moix on Sunday. Excitement around the island is unprecedented and demand for tickets has been at record levels, despite the extortionate prices for this game.

In this week’s Wednesday words, we take a trip down memory lane to look at Real Mallorca vs Real Madrid games in the recent memory, including good omens for Saturday’s game.

October 2012 – Real Mallorca 0 – 5 Real Madrid

Almost 7 years ago to the day was the last time that Real made the short plane journey to face Mallorca in a La Liga game. It was in the ill-fated relegation season of 2012-13, when Mallorca descended into the Segunda division by just one solitary point. That relegation would serve as a lesson to those who suggest that games against the likes of the big three are for nothing but damage limitation. Yet a little damage limitation wouldn’t have gone amiss in this game.

Jose Mourinho was at the helm of the giants from the capital and Cristiano Ronaldo was at his full peak, putting on a show with two goals and an assist for Gonzalo Higuaín, who picked up two goals himself in a five goal rout. He finished with 34 goals in 34 La Liga games that season but Real came up short of a dominant Barcelona, finishing 2nd, 15 points behind their rivals who amassed 100 points. The result was part of a ten game run without a win that marked Mallorca’s cards as destined for the drop. Mallorca coach Joaquín Caparrós survived that run but didn’t make it past February, sacked before Mallorca were relegated from La Liga.

August 2010 – Real Mallorca 0 – 0 Real Madrid

The last time that Mallorca managed to take a point at home from Real Madrid was in 2010 on the opening day of the La Liga season. Michael Laudrup was at the helm and his side played out a 0-0 draw, no mean feat that season as they went on to score 102 goals but still only finished 2nd behind Barcelona.

That side was full of fire power with the likes of Xabi Alonso, Ángel Di María, Ronaldo and Higuaín gracing the Son Moix turf. However, they were to find Mallorca goalkeeper Dudu Aouate in fine form as he made a series of saves. Shots from distance rained in from Ronaldo, and when Real could break through the Mallorcan defence, Aouate managed to get the crucial touch.

February 2006 – Real Mallorca 2 – 1 Real Madrid

You have to go back 13 years and 6 months to find the last Mallorca victory over Real Madrid at home. The parallels between then and this weekend are strong. Incredibly, Sergio Ramos played and opened the scoring in the game for Real. The now veteran Spain captain is likely to take the field for Real on Saturday night. Also on the field was current manager Zinadine Zidane. He was joined by a series of galacticos that night such as Roberto Carlos, David Beckham, Robinho, Ronaldo and Júlio Baptista.

Mallorca came back strong in the second half with a goal from the penalty spot from Leonardo Pisculich, followed by the winner from Juan Arango with ten minutes to go that sent Son Moix into raptures. Gregorio Manzano’s men would have an unspectacular season but few could deny that this was one of the highlights.

The presence of Ramos and Zidane is not where the similarities with that last victory end. That night coming off the bench was a Japanese player by the name of Okubo. Mallorca will be hoping that lightning strikes twice and Takefuso Kubo can cause his parent club a little bit of pain this weekend.
