RCD Mallorca – Real Sporting de Gijon: Another Cup Final Calls 🇬🇧

RCD Mallorca go into Sunday’s game against Sporting de Gijon knowing that victory would open up an almost insurmountable 10 point lead over their opponents with 5 games remaining and simultaneously knock them out of the reckoning for the top six places. It is a golden opportunity to make it 6 teams chasing 4 play off spots and eliminate one of their chasers. Sporting are not to be underestimated though as one of the form sides in the division and are unbeaten in 9 games. Time for Vicente Moreno’s men to take a deep breath and go again, another cup final calls.

Once more, RCD Mallorca will seek to rely on their trusty home form in what has become their biggest home game of the season so far. They are unbeaten at home since December and off the back of avenging that last home defeat with victory in La Roseleda last weekend against Malaga CF. RCD Mallorca are going from cup final to cup final and as this incredible season progresses fans of the Vermillion will be wondering just how far they can go. This weekend is key as they face another rival whilst other sides fighting for the top six play each other so the promotion race could look very different come Monday evening.

There have been calls on this site to Maheta Molongo this week to follow the lead of Malaga CF last week and allow cheap tickets to get the crowds flooding back and supporting the team in the final stretch. Key players such as Manolo Reina and Antonio Raillo have called for more fans in the stadium to help the team. Let’s hope that the locals of Mallorca come out in force and push the team home to victory this Sunday.

Sporting Gijon: On the Charge

Sporting de Gijon’s progression into a play off contender is one nobody would have predicted at the beginning of March. Since then they have been unbeaten in 9 games and added almost half of their entire points tally for the season in that time. They have done it through a series of tight victories, including beating key opponents. Gijon aren’t a free scoring side and haven’t won any of their games in their unbeaten run by more than one goal. They have also failed to score more than 2 goals in any of those games. Across the season as a whole, only 5 games all season have seen a side win by more than a 1 goal margin that Sporting have contended. Their 9 game charge has been more of a series of narrow and nervous victories.

Similarly to RCD Mallorca, they stay in the game and always give themselves a chance of taking something and as such I expect a tight game. However, two draws in the last two games, including last week at home to Elche, means they find themselves cornered and are close to a win or bust situation to make the play offs. They may need to be more open to force the win and make up ground on the top 6. They still have a free 3 points for their cancelled game vs Reus to come in the penultimate game of the season so need to make sure they are still in contention at that stage.

Real Mallorca Team News

Abdon Prats will again be knocking on Vicente Moreno’s door this week looking for a place from the start. The downturn in form from Ante Budimir has coincided with Abdon’s continued impact as a substitute. The Mallorquin has contributed positively with his all round play since returning to the bench, setting up Leo Suarez’s goal last week in La Roseleda and scoring home to Real Zaragoza. Fran Gamez is a doubt for Sunday and is likely to be replaced by Joan Sastre at full back.

Outside of the striking department the team is settled and unless impact left back Pervis Estupiñan makes a recovery from his injury it is highly likely that the team will remain the same, Gamez aside. Manolo Reina, Dani Rodriguez and Antonio Raillo all remain on 4 bookings and are walking a tightrope with a one game suspension when they reach their 5th of the season. It is inevitable that it will come for them at some stage, we can only hope that they don’t coincide on same game. Avoiding a suspension for games against promotion rivals is also crucial.

The Form

RCD Mallorca are unbeaten in 4 games (1 victory awarded vs Reus) and have suffered only 1 defeat in 11 games. It is 5 games since they conceded at home vs Elche in the 1-1 draw. In the key moments of the season, this team has held strong, so far.

Sporting de Gijon are unbeaten in 9 games in a mixture of games against top sides and those down the bottom. They have drawn their last 2 games scoring only one goal.

I anticipate that this will be a tight game with few goals. The first goal could well decide this game and an early goal would change the complexion of the game completely into a much more open fare. RCD Mallorca are not free scoring currently and with Ante Budimir off form they may need to look elsewhere for their goals.

RCD Mallorca 1 – 0 Sporting de Gijon

The Rivals

This is a key weekend in the Segunda division as a number of rivals for the top six face each other. Points will be dropped and the top six could look very different come Monday night.
The Top Six
At least one of our two closest rivals are sure to drop points this weekend as Cadiz host Malaga on Monday night. Second placed Granada visit top six chasers Real Oviedo in a game that could seriously tighten up the points difference between 2nd and 7th. Albacete Balompie could be the big winners of the weekend with a straightforward looking game at home to Numancia, although they are still fighting for their survival and Albacete will be without two key players through suspension.

The Chasers
Deportivo La Coruna are away at Real Zaragoza and Almeria, holding onto the top six by it’s tailcoats, are away to Lugo. As RCD Mallorca fans know better than most, there is no easy away trip in the Segunda Division.
