Mallorca's Transfer Policy: What Went Wrong? The Summer had been a busy one for Maheta Molango and his team with 14 new faces arriving plus the permanent acquisition of Martin Valjent and Ante Budimir. 7 games in and Mallorca find themselves second from bottom of La Liga. In truth, that is no major surprise to most Mallorca fans in what was always going to be a season of striving for 17th spot. What will be more of a surprise is that of those 14, only 4 have an extended spell on the field. Mallorca’s Transfer Policy: What Went Wrong?

On Friday evening in the closing seconds of the game, Real Mallorca fans got their first taste of VAR in action at Son Moix. After consulting the pitch side TV screen and a lengthy delay, the referee awarded a penalty against Real Mallorca in the 96th minute. Idrissu Baba was adjudged to have handled the ball as his clearance ricocheted back onto his hand from point blank range. The Son Moix faithful almost went away with a nasty taste left in the mouth, that was until Aritz Aduriz’s penalty was saved by Manolo Reina. The referee left the pitch to derision from the fans despite having upheld the laws of the game. In this week’s Wednesday words I ask; VAR, is it good for the game?

Following the close of the transfer window, La Liga have released the salary caps for each of the teams across La Liga and the Segunda. Real Mallorca have the lowest limit at just short of €30m, whilst Barcelona have the highest at €671m. This has raised questions over how fair La Liga actually is, with others citing examples of the death of Bury Football Club in the UK and CF Reus in Spain as the reason it should stay. In today’s Wednesday words I ask, The Salary Cap; Friend or Foe?

Lumor

A wild swing of the leg from Eibar’s Oliveira resulting in the ball looping into the goal. The width of Manolo Reina’s fingertip followed up by a kiss off the post and the ball falling kindly back into his arms. The width of a post, as Lumor’s whipped cross almost catches Moya unawares whilst the game is 0-0. One brutal counter attack with Mallorca caught up field and out of shape with moments left to go. These are the fine margins of La Liga.

Mallorca could have found themselves on any points total between 0 and 6 in their opening two games so tight the games have been. In La Liga, the cruellest of places in Spanish football, the smallest details decide who takes home the points.

88 minutes gone and the 4th official’s board goes up, number 20 enters the field. Less than 60 seconds later and with his first touch, 38 year old Artiz Adúriz, in his final season as a professional, smashes a spectacular overhead kick into the corner of the goal. With minimum effort and maximum end product, Adúriz reminded everyone of just what they will be missing next season, in the opening game of La Liga 2019 against the reigning champions Barcelona no less.

Abdon flare

Thousands of supporters on the pitch, players being carried on the shoulders of fans, Abdon Prats achieving godlike status as he celebrated with his people at Son Moix with a flare in his hand. An incredible comeback from two goals down that resulted in grown men crying, embracing total strangers and a collective smile that lasted for weeks. Those scenes are still so fresh in the memory and will live on in the minds of RCD Mallorca fans for years to come. Remember that night…?

Fast forward almost two months and RCD Mallorca are on the verge of their return to La Liga after a six season absence from the top division.
Just how competitive can they be?
