RCD Mallorca fell to a disappointing defeat on Saturday afternoon against already relegated Gimnastic to end the hopes of automatic promotion. RCD Mallorca put in a dismal performance but almost managed to salvage something from the game with a 90th minute goal from Abdon Prats. However, they couldn’t hold out and moments later conceded the winning goal with only seconds left until the final whistle.

Prior to the game RCD Mallorca were in a buoyant mood following a run of 6 games unbeaten and back to back wins against promotion rivals Sporting de Gijon and Malaga. However, this game was a banana skin which RCD Mallorca well and truly fell for. Missing key players Dani Rodriguez and Antonio Raillo through suspension, playing away to an already relegated side is not as easy as it seems. Vicente’s Moreno and his former Gimnastic men found it a particularly unhappy return to Tarragona.

RCD Mallorca must beware of the banana skin this weekend as they travel to Gimnastic de Tarragona, seeking to put themselves in with a shout of second place and automatic promotion. Relegated Gimnastic will be a tough nut to crack having beaten Osasuna and Albacete at home already this season. Suspensions for key players for RCD Mallorca means it will be up to their replacements to step in and keep the performance level high.

«Si se Puede, Si se Puede» rang around Son Moix on Sunday night at the final whistle as RCD Mallorca won in the most dramatic fashion with a late late Alex Lopez goal. The strike in the 95th minute of the game secured a deserved 2-1 victory and all but ended the play off hopes of Real Sporting de Gijon. Most importantly for RCD Mallorca, the result in the electric Son Moix atmosphere has catapulted them right into contention for the second automatic promotion spot.

RCD Mallorca go into Sunday’s game against Sporting de Gijon knowing that victory would open up an almost insurmountable 10 point lead over their opponents with 5 games remaining and simultaneously knock them out of the reckoning for the top six places. It is a golden opportunity to make it 6 teams chasing 4 play off spots and eliminate one of their chasers. Sporting are not to be underestimated though as one of the form sides in the division and are unbeaten in 9 games. Time for Vicente Moreno’s men to take a deep breath and go again, another cup final calls.

The Vermillion proved their doubters wrong in rising to the challenge and pulling off yet another unexpected away victory when they needed it the most.
